The abstract, collage-like »Movements« on Lebanese artist Raed Yassin's Phantom Orchestra are yet another piece of contemporary art born out of the COVID-19 crisis. Like a distant echo from a time most have already repressed, the experimental artist has assembled a series of recordings performed by a motley group of Berlin musicians – all united by a single premise: improvisation.

Over nearly an hour, Yassin weaves these recordings into seven progressive suites, ranging from approximately nine to twenty minutes. And while the sonic chaos at times reaches such heights that one struggles to find a common auditory anchor, the result is a creatively stimulating listening experience, as hand-played percussion, Baltic folk singing, and the Japanese koto (harp) seamlessly merge – despite the musicians never having been in the same room together.

At its core lies an immensely inspiring concept, one that draws equally from sampling aesthetics and contemporary art. This is particularly evident considering that the pieces were reportedly created using no fewer than twelve turntables, introducing an element of chance. One can only assume that this required a remarkable degree of planning – which makes it all the more astonishing when, for instance, the interplay between modular synths and drums on »Movement III« unfolds, or when the almost horror-like contrast between happy jazz trumpet, frantic vocals, and demonically prepared piano emerges on »Movement IV«.

At times, the idea behind the work is more fascinating than the sound itself, but all in all, Phantom Orchestra is a dazzling, slightly mad experiment, driven by a will to create harmony in chaos. A final echo of the pandemic – of standing together while apart.

De abstrakte, collage-lignende »Movements« på libanesiske Raed Yassins Phantom Orchestra er endnu et stykke samtidskunst født af coronakrisen. Som et fjernt ekko fra en tid, de fleste allerede har fortrængt, har den eksperimenterende kunstner samlet en række optagelser indspillet af en broget skare af Berlin-musikere – alle med ét fælles udgangspunkt: improvisation.

Over knap en time samler Yassin disse optagelser i syv progressive suiter, der strækker sig fra cirka 9 til 20 minutter. Og selvom det til tider bliver så sonisk kaotisk, at man må lede med lys og lygte efter et fælles lydmæssigt holdepunkt, er det en kreativt pirrende lytteoplevelse, når håndspillet percussion, baltisk folkesang og koto (japansk harpe) smelter sammen – vel at mærke uden, at musikerne nogensinde har været i samme rum.

Her gemmer sig en enormt inspirerende idé, der trækker lige meget på sampleæstetik og samtidskunst. Især fordi værkerne angiveligt er skabt ved hjælp af intet mindre end 12 pladespillere, hvilket tilfører et strejf af tilfældighed. Man må formode, at dette har krævet en betydelig grad af planlægning – hvilket kun gør det mere vildt, når man eksempelvis hører sammenspillet mellem modularsynth og trommer på »Movement III« eller den næsten gyseragtige kontrast mellem happy jazz-trompet, rablende vokaler og dæmonisk præpareret klaver på »Movement IV«.

Til tider er idéen bag værket mere fascinerende end selve lyden, men alt i alt er Phantom Orchestra et forrygende, smågalt eksperiment, drevet af en vilje til at skabe sammenspil i kaos. Et sidste ekko af pandemien – om at stå sammen hver for sig.

There is plenty of space around the many different sounds and voices narrating Central American horror stories on Honduran-Danish artist Xenia Xamanek’s album Germinate. The words »germinate« and »wilt« appear in the title, serving as fitting markers for the blossoming, bubbling, futuristic, and slightly eerie soundscape. A handful of voices fill the ears with mechanical, intense connections, swirling impressions of nature and language into the brain.

The album is a rare reinvention of the oratorio, the 18th-century religious opera genre featuring sung text fragments and wordless music. A significant departure from the dance floors Xamanek used to curate. Here, singers and an electro-acoustic soundscape tell stories through two simple, word-heavy recitatives, two arias with chanting narration, and electronic soundscapes.

There’s a calmness in Xenia Xamanek’s approach that can become utterly addictive. The material from their ancestral storytelling – and perhaps even the chanting narrative style – sets a scene that feels both warm and familiar. Yet at the same time, it turns original and alien as the calm of the words is challenged by dense patterns of simple sonic elements interacting with each other.

Oratorios in the 18th century lasted three hours and can easily feel distant and irrelevant today. But Xamanek’s album, rooted in the cuentos y leyendas de Honduras they heard in their childhood, offers three-quarters of an hour of presence – one that unexpectedly points forward.
